8 Retrieval Practice Activities With Classroom Examples

Try eight retrieval practice activities with classroom examples, feedback routines, and a weekly plan. Build low-stakes recall into lessons without extra grading.

Retrieval practice means recalling previously learned information from memory. Students attempt an answer before consulting notes or seeing a solution, then check and correct it. Short quizzes, spoken explanations, and drawing a process from memory can all provide retrieval practice. The aim is to strengthen learning through recall, with mistakes treated as information for the next attempt.

Why use retrieval practice?

Cognitive scientist Pooja Agarwal's overview of retrieval practice describes research supporting recall as a learning strategy across subjects and ages. Her research FAQ also recommends low-stakes practice and feedback that explains errors. This supports building recall into lessons; it does not mean any quiz game guarantees a particular improvement in grades.

The activities below are suggested lesson designs. Adapt the amount of material and response time to your learners. If students have never encountered a concept, teach it first; asking them to guess unfamiliar material is a different task from retrieving something already learned.

Eight retrieval practice activities to try

1. The three-prompt starter

Begin with one prompt from the previous lesson, one from last week, and one from an older topic. For a fractions unit, ask students to simplify 6/8, compare 2/3 with 3/4, and convert 0.5 to a fraction. Allow four minutes before revealing solutions: 3/4, 3/4 is larger, and 1/2. Ask students to mark one answer they want to revisit.

2. Rebuild the diagram

Give students a blank space and ask them to sketch a process studied earlier, such as the water cycle. Require labels for evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Compare with a reference diagram and add corrections in another color. Assess the scientific relationships, not drawing skill. A labeled verbal description can serve the same purpose.

3. Explain before revealing the options

Display a question without its answer choices. Students write a brief response, then see the choices and select an answer. For example, ask why a metal spoon and a wooden spoon can feel different in the same room. After discussion, connect the answer to heat transfer. Allow five minutes, including correction of the initial explanation.

4. A two-column recall sheet

Label the columns “My first answer” and “My correction.” Ask four short questions from a completed topic. Students fill the first column from memory and the second after checking a model. For vocabulary, require an example as well as a definition. Keep the sheet for a later attempt with the correction column folded out of view.

5. Teach a missing step

Show the start and end of a familiar worked problem, leaving out a middle step. Students reconstruct it and explain why it is valid. In 2x + 6 = 14, the missing intermediate equation is 2x = 8. Follow with 3x + 6 = 18 to check whether students can apply the method to a changed example rather than repeating the same numbers.

6. Partner recall with an individual start

Give a prompt and one minute of silent thinking before partners compare answers. Ask each student to record their own response first. Partners identify one agreement and one uncertainty, then check the class model. For literature, ask for a character's decision and the evidence that explains it. Avoid letting the more confident partner answer first every time.

7. A five-question quiz with explanations

Use three recall questions and two application questions. Include a short explanation after each answer and revisit missed concepts with fresh examples. 8. A delayed exit-ticket retry

Save an important question from an earlier lesson's exit ticket. Ask a related question several lessons later without showing the original answer. Compare the reasoning, then explain any remaining errors. For example, move from identifying a food chain to predicting what might happen when one population changes. This is a planning example, not a prescribed optimal schedule. Research guidance on spacing supports revisiting learning across time. Adjust the interval and difficulty when students cannot begin or when every answer has become automatic.

What useful feedback looks like

“Incorrect” tells a student the result but gives no next step. For 1/2 + 1/4, useful feedback is: “Use a common denominator. One half is two quarters, so two quarters plus one quarter is three quarters.” Then ask for 1/2 + 1/8. The new question checks whether the correction changed the method.

Keep a short list of concepts to revisit rather than turning every practice attempt into a grade. Use a visible timer to reserve correction time, while allowing accommodations. More questions are not useful if the session ends before students understand the answers.

Common questions about retrieval practice

Is retrieval practice the same as a test?

A test can involve retrieval, but retrieval practice can be an ungraded learning activity. Explain that students are practicing remembering, and let them correct mistakes before moving on.

Does multiple choice count?

It can. Choose questions that require students to recall or apply content and discuss the reasoning. Include some responses without answer options so you can also see what students generate independently.

How do I make retrieval practice a game?
